Brant tossed the window open and sat on the edge of the sill, looking down across the roof to the streets below, frowning at the breeze that brought just a little relief to the sweltering heat.
She swung her legs out of the window and moved out onto the roof, slipping along the silent well known pathways to wherever she wanted to go. She’d spent how many nights moving this way while the city slept? Unseen, taking this or that – whatever she’d wanted.
She stopped to watch the ends of a gathering in one back garden and then moved on, finally

He tilted his head as he looked at her, then lifted his hands and gently slid his fingers into her short shorn red hair. He hated seeing her standing there looking so… broken.
He leaned close, pressing his lips softly to her forehead. He could remember when they first met. The way she’d glanced up at him, taller than she was on the back of his horse. The lift of one eyebrow, the tilt of her head, and the disdain reflected in those green and blue eyes.
She’d scoffed without a word, almost as if daring

As she walked off down the side alley, he urged Misande to follow. The little mare easily caught up with her, and she turned her head to look up at him.
One eye was solid blue, the other had islands of pale green floating amid the blue. She pressed her lips together, her expression going from wary to unwelcoming, and she gave a slight toss of her head before looking away, scoffing at him.
“I saw what you did back there.” He said, setting Misande’s reins across her neck as he leaned over to be closer to eye level.
“Oh right, are you going to punish m

"Story That Needs A Name"
Chapter One: Smoke & Mirrors
The shadows played across the floor in an erratic dance with the golden-hued spots of daylight. The rustling of the tree that created them drifted in through the open window along with a soft early spring breeze.
She watched the play of light and dark as she leaned forward, elbows on knees, arms crossed. A faint sigh and she closed her eyes, thoughts slipping away into the wilds of memory. The faint sound of people from someplace far off down the road gently brushed across her senses, and she tilted her head ever so slightly to receive it as she let her thoughts wander further.
She wasn’t used to the little chime her “new” phone made when she got a text. She’d only had it a few weeks, and hadn’t been getting texts much for six months by now. Her bedroom was dark, just a multitude of shades of black on varying shades of gray except for near the window… and her phone in its case.
She pondered not looking. She had no reason to anymore, except for some friends she was worried about, but who she knew wouldn’t be likely to text. Not unless something was seriously wrong… and maybe not even then. She laid there under the blanket for a moment, but the thoughts of her frie

It was like nothing had changed. A gesture, and the runes and markings carved into the floor flared with deep faintly reddish purple. It followed Balthazar out of the circle, staying a good half foot back as he walked calmly to the side.
Shae turned her head, looking around the circle in disbelief for a moment.
Kort leaned back in his chair and wondered why she looked so surprised. This was basic, wasn't it? She'd said she never got to work Plasma bolts, but that sort of meant she'd worked other stuff, didn't it?
His gazed traced to his mentor's back. Balthazar was standing just a few feet away, turne

Shae held his gaze for only a few seconds before she dropped her own, feeling almost as if she were temporarily as transparent as glass.
It was Kort who spoke up first. "Hey, Shae- don't feel bad if you're bad at this stuff. No one was great when they first started. Dave took a plasma bolt to the-"
"Hey!" Dave's outcry made Shae look up at them as Dave used his elbow to shove Kort. "At least I didn't loose half a head of hair when I first started!"
She stared in surprise. Kort leaned over and flipped through the pages of Dave's textbook, to which Dave resorted to reaching up and messing up Kort's hai

Shae lifted her head, turning it slightly as she looked at Balthazar. "How did you know... ?"
Balthazar's eyes didn't leave his book, pointy shoe encased feet propped up on the chair next to him. He simply turned a page, light glinting off the rings on his fingers. "Magic. No, really," He lifted his gaze briefly, giving Shae a quick, laughing smile. "It leaves a mark on a person. It's not like we just know, though. It's very small."
She shifted her fingers, feeling the weight of her grandmother's ring resting so oddly. It felt like it was too large, even though it wasn't, and it felt almost.
Sorcerer's Apprentice FanFic - Before
Shae's parents had died when she was young.
As the fire spun out around her, she could remember that day with perfect clarity. She'd been standing in the doorway, all of two years old, with her Aunt holding her hand. They'd walked away down the little stone steps in the yard, waved as they reached the driveway and the car.
The fiery explosion that had taken them- and her Aunt's- lives was imprinted on her brain like a brand.
She'd been unconscious for a week, having slammed into whatever had been behind her. She didn't remember any of it- just the bright golds, oranges, yellows, and reds of the fiery

Eerie post dawn. Too early for anyone to be out in the dreary grey rain.
She was, though, making her way home finally. The colors of her- dusky purple backpack, black sneakers, sapphire-blue jeans, pale dusty gold-yellow jacket- were bold against the dull shadow-rich colorless world.
She lifted her head, felt the breeze lift rich brown curls off her forehead. The cool brush of wind against her cheek was a relief. She knew this world better then the one she'd just left.
How many times had she walked this stretch of sidewalk in the early hours? Even she couldn't remember. She closed her eyes as she walked
